What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P 10DLC stands for "Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code" — it's the US carrier framework that lets businesses send text messages over standard 10-digit phone numbers (instead of short codes) while staying compliant with carrier rules. Before 10DLC, businesses sending automated or high-volume SMS were technically violating carrier terms of service; the 10DLC framework formalized a path where companies register their business and message types with the carriers in exchange for higher throughput, better deliverability, and lower spam-filter risk. Every US business sending automated or marketing SMS is now expected to be A2P 10DLC registered.

What's the difference between A2P 10DLC, short codes, and toll-free numbers?

Three different SMS infrastructures, each with different tradeoffs. A2P 10DLC uses regular 10-digit phone numbers (e.g., 415-555-0199), is affordable, looks like a normal phone number, and handles two-way conversations — best for most B2B sales, support, and operations messaging. Short codes are 5- or 6-digit numbers (e.g., 88333), have the highest throughput and deliverability, and are best for high-volume marketing — but cost significantly more and don't support voice. Toll-free numbers (833, 844, etc.) can send SMS through a separate verification process — useful for businesses that already have a toll-free presence or operate nationally.

Who needs to register for A2P 10DLC?

Any US business sending automated or application-driven SMS — whether for marketing, sales outreach, appointment reminders, notifications, support replies, or anything in between. The threshold is low: even a few hundred messages a month from a CRM-driven sequence counts as A2P traffic and should be registered. Personal-to-personal texting (a rep individually replying to a customer from their own phone) is outside the framework, but virtually any business SMS that runs through a platform like Aloware needs to be 10DLC registered to deliver reliably.

What information do I need to register?

Three buckets. First, business identification: legal business name, EIN, address, website, and (for many vetting tiers) DUNS or other registration ID. Second, use case details: what types of messages you'll send (marketing, account alerts, two-factor codes, customer care, etc.) and sample message content. Third, opt-in evidence: how customers consent to receive your messages — typically a screenshot of your web form, terms-of-service language, or a description of your opt-in flow. Aloware's onboarding walks you through each of these so you don't have to interpret carrier docs yourself.

How long does A2P 10DLC registration take?

Typically a few business days for the brand verification and a few additional days per campaign — so plan for one to two weeks end-to-end, sometimes faster, sometimes slower depending on carrier review queues. Aloware submits both the brand and campaign registrations on your behalf and tracks status in your dashboard, so you can see exactly where each piece sits. What's the difference between a campaign and a brand in 10DLC?

Your brand is your business — the legal entity sending the messages. You register the brand once. Your campaigns are the specific message types you want to send under that brand: marketing announcements, account alerts, customer care replies, two-factor authentication, etc. Each campaign is registered separately, has its own use case description and sample messages, and gets its own approval from the carriers. Aloware lets you create and submit up to 50 campaigns under a single registered brand.

How much does A2P 10DLC registration cost?

There are two cost categories. One-time brand registration is a small carrier fee (typically around $4 for the brand and $40 for standard vetting if you choose it). Recurring monthly campaign fees vary by use case — typical campaigns run $1.50 to $10 per month each, charged by the carriers (not by Aloware). Per-message surcharges also apply to all 10DLC traffic. Aloware passes carrier fees through transparently in your dashboard, so you can see exactly what you're paying and to whom.

What happens if I don't register for A2P 10DLC?

Three things, in escalating severity. First, deliverability drops — unregistered traffic gets aggressively filtered, throttled, or silently dropped by the major carriers. Second, per-message surcharges increase — unregistered traffic is penalized at a higher rate than registered traffic. Third, your sender numbers can be permanently blocked — repeated unregistered campaigns get a number flagged across the carrier ecosystem, and once that happens, the only fix is provisioning new numbers. Skipping registration is the most expensive way to send SMS.

What is a Trust Score and why does it matter?

A Trust Score is the rating carriers assign your brand after vetting your registration. It's based on your business size, vetting tier, message content, and historical sending behavior. Higher Trust Scores translate to higher throughput (how many messages per second you can send), better deliverability (fewer messages filtered as spam), and lower per-message costs in some carrier networks. The score isn't fixed — sending clean, consented, on-brand messages over time improves it; spammy or high-complaint traffic damages it.
